Newham Council took Jyotindra Pinakipprasad Pandya,
licensee of N&J Pandya in East Ham Manor Way, Beckton, to court
after a young volunteer test purchaser bought drinks from the
store.
Pandya, 49, and his wife Nita, 54, of Lyndhurst Gardens,
Barking, failed to attend Stratford Magistrates' Court. The case
was heard in their absence where both were found guilty.
Mrs Pandya, who served the youngster, appeared for sentencing on
May 21. She was fined £300 plus £615 cost and a £15 victim
surcharge.
Mr Pandya was fined £300 for selling alcohol to a minor, £150
for not displaying his premises summary plus £997.60 costs and a
£15 victim surcharge.
The magistrate also revoked his personal licence with immediate
effect, which means he will not be able to have a personal licence
for five years.
Also appearing in court on the same day was Demet Ozdemir,
licensee of Kapadokya Food Centre in Romford Road, Manor Park.
A member of staff under her supervision served alcohol to a
young test purchaser.
Ozdemir, 29, of north London, pleaded guilty to the offence and
was fined £200 plus £740.28 in costs and a £15 victim
surcharge.
Executive member for public protection, Councillor Andrew
Baikie, said: "These cases highlight the fact that it's important
that businesses must ensure all staff working in their pubs and
stores are fully aware of the law on selling alcohol and other
age-restricted goods.
"If they do not, then they will suffer the consequences. We will
not hesitate to prosecute any traders who fail to adhere to the
law." |
