Oriental Grill gets
fried for illegal signage
A high street business has been
heavily fined for breaching Newham Council's advertising
regulations.
The owners of the East Ham business, The Oriental Grill,
the freeholders of the property, the managing agents for the
freeholders and Adrenalin Advertising were all prosecuted by the
council for their parts in installing and failing to remove the
unsightly signage at 135a High Steet North.
In late 2007, the council were alerted to two large advertising
banners erected illegally on the side of the building advertising
the food available from the property.
Despite numerous warnings from the council the building owners
failed to remove the signs until January 2008 when they replaced
the two signs with another illegal sign.
The Stratford Magistrate's Court found all parties guilty and
fined Oriental Grill owner, Mohammed Ali £1,000 and ordered he pay
£1,000 costs. Adrenalin Advertising was fined £1,500 and ordered to
pay £750 costs while Jaybee Limited and Golfrate Property
Management were both fined £7,500 and ordered to pay £2,035
costs.
Executive member for public realm, Councillor Ian Corbett, said:
"These regulations are in place to stop illegal signs from
cluttering up the High Street.
"The council will continue to take action against any business
who breach these guidelines in order to protect and improve the
borough's image."
