Young people unveil
their take on Newham's past, present and future
Young people from Newham have
expressed their vision and memories of the borough through the
creation of a series of artistic hoardings which are now on display
near Canning Town tube station.
The art depicts the history of Canning Town and Custom
House and reflects young people's own personal experiences of where
they live.
Local councillors Paul Schafer and Pat Holland met with the
young people from a local youth inclusion project as their street
art went on public display.
Councillor Pat Holland said: "The art is truly outstanding and
very personal. It shows the changes and events in Canning Town and
Custom House both old and new. We hope members of the public take a
moment of their time to look on and follow the local history and
personal experiences of young people from the area."
The art project was funded by Newham's Canning Town and Custom
House regeneration programme.
Young artist Shazad Zaman, 16, said "This was a chance to get
creative and express ourselves. I really enjoyed the project. I'm
quite proud it's out on display in such a prominent place."
Canning Town Youth Inclusion project manager Sally Rogers said:
"The young people now have a reminder of their very own
contribution to improving the way that their neighbourhood looks. I
believe that the group learned lots about their local community and
are very proud of what was achieved."
