Newham to honour armed
forces
Newham Council is inviting
people to honour the first ever National Armed Forces Day and pay
tribute to the Armed Forces community including currently serving
troops, service families, veterans and recruits.
Celebrations in Newham will begin with a flag raising
ceremony on Monday June 22nd at Newham Town Hall, East
Ham.
On Saturday June 27th, there will be a March of Honour by the
British Legion, cadets, girl guides and scouts followed by a fete
in the Royal Victoria Gardens, Albert Road, Woolwich.
Newham Mayor, Sir Robin Wales, said the events give locals the
opportunity to show their support for the troops.
He said: "The freedom and democracy we enjoy came at a price and
we will never forget the bravery of the millions of men and women
who fought in defence of our nation.
"On June 22 we encourage people to join us at the Town Hall in
East Ham to raise the flag for Armed Forces Day and to reflect on
the debt owed to those who have fought and died for this
country.
"The following Saturday will also be a great opportunity for
Newham to get together and recognise the armed forces.
"Newham does more than any other local authority to provide
opportunities for people to get together.
"The parade and fete area a great way of honouring our armed
forces veterans and those still serving as well as providing
opportunities to have fun and be active."
The fete will feature a performance by the British Caledonian
Armed Forces Pipe Band as well as an exhibition on the area's
history and an information stand about the work of local
cadets.
Summer music, kids activities and food stalls will make the day
an event for the whole family.
