A look at the future
of Canning Town
Exciting ideas showing residents
what Canning Town could look like in the future went on display at
a public exhibition at the Canning Town and Custom House
Regeneration Offices last week.
Newham Council and London Thames Gateway Development
Corporation (LTGDC), the Government's agency responsible for
regenerating East London, are currently selecting a development
partner to revitalise the town centre at Canning Town.
As part of the exhibition, the two potential partners presented
their approach to regenerating Canning Town including new high
quality homes, improved shopping, attractive public spaces as well
as local services and facilities. The events were held at The
Place, at the heart of Canning Town and were attended by 150
people.
Councillor Conor McAuley, executive member for regeneration,
said: "Consultation is central to the regeneration of Canning Town
and Custom House. We work closely with residents and businesses in
our ambitious plans to transform the area.
"We particularly valued hearing the experiences of individual local
residents in the streets, shops and properties affected by the
scheme. We want to see plenty of opportunities for residents to get
involved throughout the development of the scheme."
Peter Andrews, Chief Executive of London Thames Gateway
Development Corporation said: "Despite the challenges posed by the
economy delivering Canning Town's regeneration is one of our key
priorities. We have completed land assembly and are now actively
preparing the site to make way for this new commercial and retail
centre in the heart of Canning Town. Local people's views will be
vital to the successful transformation of Canning Town."
Bouygues and E-Central submitted their bids in February. As part
of the evaluation process LTGDC and Newham Council want to hear
from local residents, stakeholders and partner organisations. The
exhibition was well attended and provided an opportunity for people
to view the plans, speak to the potential developers and comment on
the proposals by completing a questionnaire. LTGDC and Newham
Council expect to announce the preferred development partner at the
beginning of the summer.
Both submissions are based on the Canning Town and Custom House
Masterplan which was jointly developed by LTGDC and Newham Council.
The masterplan sets out a visionary, yet deliverable, long-term
strategy to create a thriving, vibrant and exciting neighbourhood.
The principles of the masterplan have been incorporated into a
Supplementary Planning Document that was recently shortlisted in
the London Planning Awards.
