A picture paints a
thousand words…or less
A new initiative encouraging
residents aged over 60 to capture the history of Newham has been
launched by the council.
Local people are being asked to bring a picture,
photograph or piece of artwork that says something about the
history of their community to a series of workshops.
Participants will be invited to discuss their experiences living
in Newham and express their views through creative writing.
The artwork and writing created will be used as part of an
exhibition which will tour Newham's libraries in the autumn.
The workshops will be facilitated by professional poet and
playwright Heather Taylor and London based community poet Evlynn
Sharp.
The project is being run by Newham Council, Age Concern Newham
and other groups working with older people.
Executive member for culture, Councillor Jo Corbett, said: "It's
important to remember the history of our communities and the impact
it has had on Newham's future. This project aims to give voice to
the past by hearing the stories, the thoughts and views of the
older residents in the borough who have lived through fascinating
times."
Participants will also be invited to contribute oral histories
which will be recorded and form part of the exhibition.
