Staff from Newham Council have raised more than £1,300 for Breast Cancer Care following a challenge set by Deputy Mayor of Newham, Councillor Christine Bowden, to raise funds for the charity.

The council's contact centre in East Ham raised £475 by holding a pink clothes day and a cake sale and received a visit from Councillor Bowden where they handed over a cheque for the amount raised.

Hundreds of pink ribbons were sold at Local Service Centres and Libraries.

Other fundraising initiatives included a pink coffee morning and a Christmas hamper raffle.

Councillor Bowden said: "The effort made by staff has been exceptional. Even though times are hard people have dug deep and donated money. I am very proud of their endeavours and congratulate them all."
