Flag raised for
Bangladesh Independence Day
Pupils from Vicarage primary
school were among the 200 people who commemorated the 38th
anniversary of the independence of Bangladesh.
The Bangladeshi national anthem was sung as the flag
was raised at the Newham Council event held on March 26 at the Town
Hall, East Ham.
Nazrul Sikder, consular attaché from the Bangladesh High
Commission, and a resident of Newham, was guest of honour. He said:
"It is a pleasure to be celebrating Bangladesh Independence Day in
Newham. Thank you to Sir Robin Wales and the council for organising
this event for our community every year."
Mayor Sir Robin Wales said: "We are a tolerant society and we
fly the Bangladeshi flag alongside the Union flag to show that we
celebrate different cultures together."
Councillor Unmesh Desai, executive member for communities,
hosted the event on behalf of Newham Council. Other councillors
attending included Councillors Ayesha Chowdhury, Rohima Rahman,
Omana Gangadharan and Khalil Kazi OBE.
The ceremony was followed by refreshments.
