G20 summit

March 25, 2009
break
The G20 summit will be taking place on April 2 at the Excel exhibition centre with world leaders gathering to discuss the global economy.

On the day it will be business as usual for the council, but the Metropolitan Police say there is likely to be some disruption in the immediate area arising from protests against the summit.

We have been working with the police and other partners to ensure that there is a robust approach in dealing with any incident as a result of the protests in relation to the summit. The council supports the rights of people to protest peacefully, but people should be able to carry out their daily business without the fear of disorder.

We expect the police to robustly deal with any criminal or anti-social behaviour, taking appropriate and proportionate action as a matter of urgency. We have also asked for assurances that local policing elsewhere in the borough will not be affected.

Should there be any protest activity, we are determined that neither residents nor the council have to pick up the tab for clearing up after the summit.

Public Transport
Docklands Light Railway trains will be running but Custom House and Prince Regent stations will be closed on April 2. A decision is still to be taken about Royal Victoria Station. Further information will be available from Transport for London nearer the time.

Road closures
The Connaught Bridge will be closed on April 2 from 6am until midnight. Other roads to be closed are those at the western end of ExCeL - Western Gateway, Seagull Lane, Sandstone Lane and Tidal Basin Road. Other surrounding roads are expected to remain open.

The pedestrian areas closest to ExCeL will be closed from 00.01 on April 1 to 23.59 on April 2. These include the Royal Victoria Dock footbridge, the route from Custom House DLR station to the footbridge and the route from Royal Victoria DLR station to the edge of the dock.

Schools
Schools in the area will be open as usual.

Public Order
Police will do everything possible to prevent inconvenience. They will deal with any protestor activity or criminal or anti-social behaviour, appropriately and proportionately as a matter of urgency.

If you want to report any crime or anti-social behaviour issues before or during the summit, you can contact police on the following numbers:

• Custom House Safer Neighbourhood Team - 020 8721 2039
• Canning Town South Safer Neighbourhood Team - 020 8721 2840
• Royal Docks Safer Neighbourhood Team - 020 8721 2582
• Beckton Safer Neighbourhood Team - 020 8721 2040

Residents
Residents at the western end of the ExCeL estate will have difficulty accessing their homes, whether by vehicle or on foot, because of road closures at the site and also with searching and screening taking place. They will be required to carry two forms of identification/proof of address (one of which must be photographic) to gain entry through security cordons.

Residents in surrounding areas will not be required to carry ID unless they are planning to travel into the ExCeL estate for work.

Vulnerable people
Council staff are assessing vulnerable people at risk within the immediate area and are making necessary arrangements. They will maintain communication with those people should any protests occur. Staff will be on standby to activate contingency plans if required.

Cleansing arrangements
There are no scheduled resident collections in the area on the day. A small number of businesses may miss out on collections but these will be dealt with as soon as possible. They have been advised of the alternative arrangements.

Arrangements are in place to clean up the area as a result of any protestor activity. The council is determined that neither residents nor we will have to pick up the tab for clearing up after the protestors.

Communication
We will publish further updates about the summit on this site as they become available.
