Response to industrial
action at Royal Docks Community School
In response to industrial action
on March 19 by the NUT and NASUWT at Royal Docks Community School
in Custom House, a Newham Council spokesperson said:
"We are extremely disappointed that the unions have used
their outright opposition to academies to disrupt the education of
the students and let them down.
"However, we would like to thank the committed teachers who turned
up for work as normal, to ensure the work of Year 11 students did
not suffer, particularly as they are at such a critical stage in
preparing for their GCSE examinations.
"The young people of Custom House and Canning Town deserve the
best education and chances in life. The school has failed them -
that is why we are taking radical action.
"The details of the academy are still being discussed with the
governing body, parents and teachers. There are strict guidelines
on the role and responsibilities of sponsors, and the governing
body will remain as the key decision-makers.
"Ark Schools has a proven track record of overcoming poor
performance and delivering successful academies. All Ark academies
that have been open for more than a year have shown improved
academic attainment. We want to see our young people benefit from
the same success."
