Café Rial @ THE hub in Star Lane, Canning Town celebrated receiving the Well London Healthier Options food award.

Newham Council's executive member for health, Councillor Clive Furness, presented the award to the café.

To achieve the Healthier Options award, Café Rial took part in a rigorous nutrition assessment and training programme delivered by HealthWorks in London and Newham NHS Primary Care Trust, with the support of Well London.

To celebrate and demonstrate that healthy means tasty, Café Rial @ THE hub offered a free selection of healthy options tasters for customers to try on the day.

Councillor Furness said: "Congratulations to Café Rial. They have had great success in promoting the healthy eating message to customers. I hope that this will be an incentive for other eateries to get involved in the scheme.

"A major barrier to people eating healthily is the lack of awareness about what goes into their meals when they dine out. The Healthier Options award scheme will provide customers with access to nutritionally balanced and healthy food."

All cafés taking part received a visit from a nutritionist who observed their cooking practices and provided feedback on making changes to their ingredients to improve the health content and preparation of meals.

To recognise a Healthier Options café, the green logo is displayed in the window, or marked next to items on the menu.
