Freedom honour for
golden girl Christine
World, Olympic and Commonwealth
400m Champion Christine Ohuruogu has being given a top honour by
Newham Council.
Christine, who was brought up in Stratford close to the
planned London 2012 Olympic Stadium and the first British woman to
win the Olympic 400 metres title at the Beijing 2008 Games,
received the Freedom of the Borough during the Annual Meeting of
the council.
The title - the highest a local authority can bestow on an
individual - was in recognition of her distinguished service to
sport and for being a role model to young people in Newham.
Mayor Sir Robin Wales said: "We are all so proud of Christine
and what better way could there be to show our appreciation? She
truly is a golden girl and a role model for youngsters throughout
the borough.
"A true Stratford girl, Christine has put Newham on the map. Her
achievement and example is an inspiration to our residents and
particularly to our young people, showing just how far they can go
with determination, aspiration and hard work.
"Sixty per cent of the Olympics will take place in Newham and we
have the Olympic Stadium. The eyes of the world will soon be upon
us. We want to find the next superstars to follow her glorious
lead.
"Here in Newham, we're continuing our drive of the last few
years to get residents active and involved in sport. Newham does
more than any other borough to promote health and fitness and we'll
continue to do so."
Christine said: "I am very honoured to be conferred the title of
Honorary Freeman by Sir Robin Wales and pleased to have my family
and friends with me to mark the occasion.
"I grew up in Newham and continue to live here today. This is my
home and in just a few years, it will be home to thousands of
athletes from around the world that I look forward to welcoming. I
am proud of my achievements so far and am looking forward to
defending my Olympic title in London - in Games that I know will
inspire young people and genuinely impact their participation in
sport."
