Newham fast-food business hit hard for poor hygiene practices

An East London fast-food restaurant, infested with mice and cockroaches, was temporarily shut-down for failing to meet necessary hygiene standards.

Newham Council environmental health officers discovered the pests when they visited Yankees Fried Chicken, at 433 Barking Road East Ham, last Thursday May 8.

The pests were entering the building through gaps behind poorly fitted tiling in the food preparation and storage areas.

There was also no water supply or soap for the hand basin in the staff toilet, adding to the risk of food contamination.

Following an appearance at the Stratford Magistrates Court on Tuesday May 13, an emergency prohibition order was granted and the owner, Mr Mohammad Munir Qureshi, was told his business would need to be thoroughly cleaned up if he hoped to open again.

The Council gave permission for the business to re-open earlier today.

Councillor Andrew Baikie, Newham's executive member for public protection, said: "Newham Council takes a very hard line on food businesses failing to meet necessary hygiene standards.

"We assure the public that the owners of Yankees Fried Chicken have only been allowed to begin trading again because we're confident that their premises and practices are up to scratch.

"Other food businesses should be aware that lax hygiene practices will not be tolerated under any circumstance

Mr Qureshi was also asked to pay costs of £481.97 to the London Borough of Newham.
