Newham Council has been able to offer more than 89 per-cent of pupils their first preference for school placement in September and January, despite a marked increase in the number of applications.

Statistics show that school entry numbers in Newham are continuing to rise rapidly. There were 400 more applications than last year.

Councillor Quintin Peppiatt, said the Council is working with future growth in mind to ensure it can maintain this high level of first preference placements.

He said: "While it's pleasing to see children being placed at schools close to home, additional places are being provided at a number of schools to ensure that we are able to continue this trend for future years.

"This year Newham received 3801 applications from residents and 43 from residents outside the borough. We were able to give 3449 of these applicants their first preference.

"As these numbers grow, we continue to pressure the Government for additional funding to expand primary school placements across the borough.
