North Woolwich
Learning Zone officially unveiled
Newham Council's Deputy Mayor,
Cllr Christine Bowden, has officially opened the North Woolwich
Learning Zone.
The new adult learning centre in Albert Road offers
residents the opportunity to study a wide range of courses,
including drawing, computer skills, languages, cookery and
dance.
Cllr Bowden said the opening marks the completion of a long
running program to improve community infrastructure facilities in
North Woolwich.
She said: "Today marks the end of almost ten years of work here
in North Woolwich.
"In that time we've been able to deliver a number of
improvements to the community including the opening of the Drew
Primary School, the refurbishment of the St John's Community Centre
and the wonderful facility being opened today.
"All of this has happened through full community consultation,
combined with integrated planning and bringing together a range of
funding opportunities.
"We hope that the development of this learning zone, combined
with improved transport connections in the area, will attract
adults outside North Woolwich to come and take part in the exciting
learning opportunities."
The new facility was developed in partnership between Newham
Council, the Royal Docks trust, the Learning and Skills Council and
the East Thames Housing Group.
Eric Sorensen, Chair of the Royal Docks Trust, said adult
learning is an important part of the community to invest in.
"By providing Newham residents with an opportunity to learn new
skills, we're helping them participate in and benefit from
regeneration in Newham."
