Persistence pays off
for 2009 Art Awards Winner
It was a case of '6th time's a
charm' for the winner of the Newham Council sponsored, 2009 London
City Airport Annual Art Awards this year.
Parvin Khoshdale from Beckton took home the £500 first
prize for her oil on canvas piece entitled 'Hit man, the Proud Face
of Sport.'
This year's theme of health, sport and fitness drew almost 40
entries. Seventeen were then shortlisted and displayed at the
airport terminal.
Ms Khoshdale has entered the competition for the past six years
and says she was truly honoured to scoop top prize this year.
"I'm over the moon. It really shows that people appreciate your
work.
"I think the theme was really interesting. It makes people pay
attention to health and fitness. It also ties in with the Olympics
which are coming to the area in 2012."
Newham Mayor, Sir Robin Wales, says the competition highlights
the depth of artistic talent in the borough.
"Year after year we're seeing the work of exceptional artists,
all right here in Newham, it seems the talent pool just keeps
growing. This year the artists were able to draw attention to the
important issue of health and well being.
"We're continuing our drive of the last few years to get
residents active and involved in sport. Newham does more than any
other borough to promote health and fitness and we'll continue to
do so until the message gets through."
Second prize was awarded to Ilford resident Mavis Grant, who
took home £200 for her entry entitled 'Healthy Food.'
Steve Marriott, Anne Neary and Gerry Shelvin were all awarded
highly commended for their entries.
