Recycling rates
soar
More waste is being recycled in
Newham than ever before thanks to the efforts of the council and
the borough's residents.
Recycling rates in Newham are up from 15 to 20 per
cent, with more than 286 tonnes of waste being in recycled in
September compared to 208 tonnes in April.
The impressive increase is down to a number of initiatives
including teams of doorknockers visiting more than 12,000 homes in
the last five months to promote recycling and street cleaners
recycling waste they pick up from the borough's streets.
A 'Cleaner, Greener' campaign has also been running which aims to
inform residents about how and what they can recycle in the
borough.
Newham Council aims to continue the good work and has a target
rate of 27 per cent by 2011.
Newham Mayor Sir Robin Wales said: "As a borough, we are committed
to minimising our impact on the environment and reducing
landfill.
"The latest recycling figures are very impressive. Our residents
are doing an excellent job and we want them to keep up the good
work so that we can continue to increase the amount of waste we
recycle."
