It was once said that 'walking is man's best medicine', so Newham Council is encouraging residents to take a stroll around the borough to see for themselves.
The authority has organised three fantastic summer walks taking in the sights and sounds of Green Street, Stratford and Three Mills, led by qualified guides.

Sauntering through Stratford, which is home to the Olympic Park where roughly two thirds of the 2012 Games will take place, residents will be able to see regeneration projects such as Westfield Shopping Centre taking shape.

While there are plenty of new sights to see, the borough's history lends itself to mesmerisingly beautiful nautical scenery, which can be seen by ambling along the Royal Docks. Behind the ExCeL International Exhibition Centre is where new and old meet, as walking beside the water offers stunning views of the loading cranes that still dominate the landscape, long after the stevedores departed.

Then there's the chance to discover history, heritage and wildlife of the fascinating Three Mills location. Once again, old meets new as this area houses a former distillery that has since been transformed into one of London's largest film and TV studios, where cinema successes including Tim Burton's Corpse Bride and 28 Days Later.

Newham Council's executive member for Older People and Adults, Councillor Joy Laguda, said: "Everyone knows the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are happening in Newham - but the borough already had a wealth of treasures to offer. Walking is also a great way to keep fit and requires very little preparation or equipment."

22 Aug - Green Street - meet at Upton Park Tube Station
25 Aug - Royal Docks - meet outside ExCeL, main entrance, Western Gateway (a few moments from Custom House DLR Station)
