A Plaistow shop and its staff have been fined a total of £580 after being found guilty of selling knives to a 14-year-old girl.
Pricemarker Ltd on Barking Road sold a13-piece function pocket knife and lockable craft knife set to a teenage test purchaser working on behalf of Newham Council trading standards in May 2009.

During the case at Stratford Magistrates' Court, Mohammad Razan Uddin, director of Pricemarker Ltd was fined £365 with £400 costs.

Sales assistant Mohammad Burham Uddin was fined £215 and ordered to pay costs of £300.

Both defendants pleaded guilty to breaching S141 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988 which prohibits the sale of knives to anyone under the age of 18.

Councillor Andrew Baikie, executive member for housing, process and business efficiency said after case: "Shops throughout the borough are visited by trading standards officers who give them guidance on underage sales so it is very disappointing that these sales are taking place.

"These laws are in place to protect the public from harm and we will not hesitate in prosecuting anyone making underage knife sales."
