Mayor's Newham Show a
spectacular success
Almost 50,000 people attended
Central Park in East Ham over the weekend to see the annual Mayor's
Newham Show.
The sun-drenched spectacular drew people to see and
enjoy a whole host of free activities, such as the popular beach,
which played host to a sandcastle competition as well as a seaside
fancy dress show and donkey rides.
An amazing carnival of local schoolchildren filled East Ham's
streets with colour and music as the glittering procession wound
its way from Cheltenham Gardens to the park on Saturday. A
traditional village fete housed many treasures, from fabrics to
train sets, while the cake competitions unearthed the borough's
master chefs.
Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales said: "Almost 50,000 of us gathered
for a wonderful family event with something for people of all ages
to get involved in. We always make sure our people have fun and we
will continue to run events like the Mayor's Newham Show which will
make people feel part of their local communities. That is the
Newham we are aiming for. I'm already looking forward to next
year."
Olympians Sally Gunnell and Newham Sports Academy chief Tessa
Sanderson were on hand to lend their knowledge and expertise to the
borough's burgeoning athletes. Residents also had the opportunity
to sign up for the Tour of Britain cycling event taking place at
Newham Dockside on September 18.
Residents jived their way around the cabaret tent to the sounds of
Sal Bashir's Asian Elvis tribute act and there were plenty of
lively performances on the music stage which had youngsters
throughout the borough moving to funky beats.
Young Mayor Kaycee de Belen and Youth Council members were also
present to find out more about the views of local young
people.
Council staff were on hand to give top tips on recycling and
healthy living, and residents were able to find out about job and
training opportunities through the council. There was also
information on how the the authority is working with the police to
make the borough a safer place.
And residents had the chance to find out what Newham will look
like in the future and ask questions about planned
improvements.
