Queens Market open on
Sundays
Queens Market traders have
thanked Newham Council for enabling it to open on Sundays for the
first time in more than 100 years.
The historic Upton Park trading venue, located at the
heart of London's East End, is a magnet for people looking for
quality goods at bargain prices.
Stallholder Tahir Rahman, who has been trading at the market for
more than five years, said: "It's fantastic news and we'd like to
thank the council for supporting us.
"There are loads of shoppers in and around Green Street on Sundays
so it makes perfect sense.
"You also get people who come from outside the borough, so it's
important to have a market that's open."
Queens Market will now open from 10am-4pm every Sunday from April
4.
The market shops are open seven days a week from 9am-6pm, with the
market stalls open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and
soon Sundays.
Newham Council is looking for more traders to join this thriving
market and has introduced a reduced rate for newcomers - £10 for
the first four weeks, increasing to £20 afterwards.
Executive member for housing, process and business efficiency
Andrew Baikie, said:
"In these tough times it's important that we do everything we can
to help businesses.
"That's why we smoothed the way for Queens Market to open on
Sundays at the request of traders and residents alike.
"It's an ideal solution - hopefully traders will benefit from
increased business while shoppers will be able to get the complete
Green Street experience for the first time on a Sunday."
Boleyn ward councillor Riaz Ahmed Mirza said: "The market is
getting bigger and better and offers a wide range of goods. Prices
for the pitches are a bargain, so if you are a trader that can sell
any of the above mentioned products, get in touch."
