Exam success for
Newham's pupils
Secondary school students in
Newham have put in a top class performance with GCSE results that
have improved overall for the seventh year in a row.
Provisional results show the percentage of young people achieving
five or more A* to C GCSEs or equivalent including English and
Maths - the Government's gold standard - rose from 47 per cent in
2009 to 51 per cent this year.
Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales and Councillor Quintin Peppiatt,
executive member for children and young people, visited Little
Ilford School in Manor Park where the percentage of pupils who
achieved five or more A* to C grades including English and Maths
was 54% - up 12 percentage points on last year.
The Mayor said: "Results day is an important milestone in our young
people's lives and it's a privilege to be able to share in their
excitement. I congratulate all pupils on such wonderful
results.
"All of our schools work hard and the results this year show that
strong leadership is paying off. We will continue to invest in
education and work with schools in the coming academic year so that
we can carry on improving."
Councillor Peppiatt, executive member for children and young
people, said: "Once more we're seeing wonderful results in Newham.
Our young people have again done better than students in far more
privileged and wealthy areas. We've met the challenging target the
Government set for us."
St Angela's Ursuline School in Forest Gate performed best in Newham
with 84 per cent gaining five or more A* to C GCSEs or equivalent
including English and Maths.
The most improved schools gaining five or more A* to C GCSEs or
equivalent including English and Maths were Rokeby School in
Stratford (up 21 percentage points to 64); Brampton Manor School in
East Ham (up 19 percentage points to 58) and Little Ilford School
(up 12 percentage points to 54).
In 2005 just 16 per cent of Rokeby pupils achieved five or more A*
to C GCSEs or equivalent including English and Maths. This year at
64 it exceeded its target by 24 percentage points.
Cllr Peppiatt, who was with pupils as they opened their results,
said: "Standards at Rokeby School are improving year on year and
the school now has a reputation to be proud of.
"Many pupils arrive at the school with English as a second language
and what they achieve is remarkable. Rokeby is also moving to a
brand new building with state-of-the-art facilities so we're
looking forward to more improvement there and from all our
schools."
