A spectacular colourful carnival and performances from stars of TV's Britain's Got Talent and children's choirs ensured that miserable weather failed to dampen the spirits of those who attended the Mayor's Newham Show.

The sun may have been playing hide and seek with the rain but still more than 25,000 people flocked to East Ham's Central Park for a weekend of free entertainment.

Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales said: "The weather may have been against us but more than 25,000 people gathered for a wonderful family event with something for all ages to get involved in.

"Once again the Mayor's Newham Show has proved that people enjoy feeling part of their local communities and that is why we will continue to host these fantastic free events."

The show started with the Newham Carnival where hundreds of schoolchildren and community groups danced their way through the streets of East Ham in a feast of colour.

In the park visitors could feel the sand under their feat or dip their toes into the padding pool as the Newham at the Seaside beach complete with deck chairs and donkey rides proved popular.

At the Newham Village Fete area you could try hoopla or the coconut shy while there were prizes for the best cake, lettuce, rhubarb and strawberry. An Olympic Stadium cake made by Sue McCann from East Ham attracted many admirers.

There were physical activities to try from dancing to sport while Newham's Young Mayor Ali Mohamed showed how it was done by getting youngsters to test their fitness with some Sumo wrestling.

On the main music stage, East Ham resident James Anderson, star of TV's Britain's Got Talent, gave a mesmerising musical performance accompanied by fellow TV finalist, pianist Paul Gbegbaje.

The Newham Youth Choir teamed up with their counterparts from Barnsley in Yorkshire for an inspiring collection of songs. The very best of Newham talent also had a chance to shine in the finals of the community forum talent quest, won by Tanyel Hassan from East Ham.

The Cabaret Tent echoed to the sounds of East Ham's own Asian Elvis Sal Bashir as well as acts of stylish juggling and breathtaking acrobatics.

The borough saluted its history in the Pride of Newham area and stared into the future at the Our Place in the Future of London tent to learn more about the borough's regeneration plans.

In the arts and crafts tent you could activities such as knitting and hat making. The health and well-being tent advises on ways to lead a healthier life, offering free health MOTs and checking weight and blood pressure.
