Newham Council votes
to propose Olympic Stadium partnership with OPLC
At this evening's extraordinary
meeting of the full Council of the London Borough of Newham (Monday
28 November), the Chief Executive was given the delegated authority
to proactively approach the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) to
propose a partnership with Newham Council in a public-public
ownership of the Olympic Stadium to help secure community
benefits.
Newham Council is prepared to invest up to £40m subject
to an appropriate and acceptable return on its investment.
To help reduce the risk of delay in any future Stadium process,
Newham Council proposes to play no part in the selection of any
anchor tenant or tenants.
The Council will now approach OPLC with a view to negotiating such
a partnership.
A Newham Council spokesperson said: "The meaningful future use of
the Olympic Stadium is crucial in securing a lasting legacy for our
residents after the 2012 Games.
"Our vision for the Olympic Stadium remains to create significant
community benefits including job creation, increased sports
participation and the establishment of a major visitor
attraction.
We are determined to help deliver the promises set out in the
original bid book to transform the lives of those living in
London's East End, especially for the residents of
Newham."
