Elderly and vulnerable residents who experience social isolation and find it hard to get out, were treated to a Christmas meal organised by Newham Council for the second year running.

The council’s initiative is to bring the most vulnerable in the borough together during the festive season, to help them feel part of the community and reduce isolation.

Hot festive meals have been organised at eight community neighbourhood centres, for residents over 78 or over, who are living alone or on a low income. Those attending the lunches were given a goodie bag with seasonal treats.

Beryl Veares, who was at the Green Street Christmas lunch, spent her afternoon at Elmhurst Primary School. Beryl, a former student at Elmhurst Primary school has lived in the Green Street community neighbourhood all her life. She was pleased to be served by some of the school’s pupils. Beryl said:

“I’ve really enjoyed the meal and the banter with other people. It’s given me a chance to dress up and make new friends. It’s wonderful that the council has organised this as it’s helped me get out of my usual routine and meet others.”

Many people experience loneliness and isolation at this time of the year and this can be especially hard for older people.

Resident Prudence Heldt, has lived in Newham for 40 years. Prudence said: “Christmas is about spending time with family and friends but sometimes that isn’t possible. Companionship during the festive season is a lifeline for the elderly and makes the experience magical.”

Other festive lunches are taking place in Stratford and West Ham on 10 December, Beckton and Royal Docks on 11 December, Plaistow on 12 December, Custom House and Canning Town on 16 December and East Ham on 17 December.

Last year more than 400 elderly and vulnerable residents enjoyed a Christmas lunch served by local schoolchildren. As in 2018, this year’s lunches have been organised by the Council with sponsorship from Aspers Casino and Tate & Lyle.
