Newham welcomes 2022 Commonwealth Games to the Lee Valley VeloPark

Global sport stars will return to Newham as the borough helps to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The games, which will be hosted by Birmingham, will bring Commonwealth track cycling to the Lee Valley VeloPark on the tenth anniversary of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Newham is the only venue outside the West Midlands to host an event and the council welcomes Birmingham 2022 to the borough.

The Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz, said: “We are delighted to welcome the 2022 Commonwealth Games to Newham and the Lee Valley VeloPark, giving our residents the chance to enjoy world-class cyclists competing in the borough, inspiring our community and boosting the local economy.

“On the tenth anniversary of London 2012, Birmingham 2022 will reignite the excitement seen at the Olympic and Paralympic games when the likes of Sir Chris Hoy, Geraint Thomas, Sarah Storey, Jason and Laura Kenny took to the track.”

Birmingham 2022 will see 17 thrilling sports take place over 11 days of action-packed competition, between 27 July and 7 August, 2022.

Mayor Fiaz added: “The choice of the Lee Valley VeloPark as a venue is a vote of confidence in Newham’s ability to host global events.

“We will strive to ensure Birmingham 2022 benefits as many local people as possible and encourage more people to take up sport.

“We will be working with the organisers to welcome athletes and spectators from across the Commonwealth and the world to Newham and involving local people as Games Ambassadors to give a warm welcome to the new heart of London.”

Team England took home nine medals in track cycling at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia’s Gold Coast.

John Crabtree, Chairman of the Birmingham Organising Committee for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, said: “Using existing and well-established local venues was a key benefit of our bid to ensure the efficiency and affordability of the 2022 Commonwealth Games; but like most previous Commonwealth Games, we needed to widen the net when local facilities were not already in place.

“Lee Valley VeloPark is a fantastic facility, and it will be truly exciting to bring a taste of the Commonwealth Games action to the velodrome for our Track Cycling competition on the ten-year anniversary of London 2012.”

The velodrome has hosted a number of international events since the 2012 Games, including the Track Cycling World Cup and the Track Cycling World Championship. It will host the track cycling World Cup again in December.

Shaun Dawson, chief executive of Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, said: “We were delighted to support Birmingham 2022 when they approached us.

“Lee Valley VeloPark has a history of major international events and in 2022 will become the only venue in the world to have hosted an Olympics, World Cup and Commonwealth Games in the same sport.

“Outside events, the venue is firmly established as a place where thousands of people cycle on the track, road, mountain and BMX circuits every year, enjoying this inspirational venue which is hugely popular with schools, community groups, clubs and corporates.

“The Lee Valley Regional Park Authority looks forward to welcoming Birmingham and the Commonwealth community in 2022.”
