Benefits - what can I claim?

Benefits and tax credits may give you support in certain situations where you need it, whether you are working or not. It is likely that you would be better off working if this is possible.
 
Since April 2013, there have been a number of changes to benefits for working age people. It is important that you know if and how these changes affect you.

Benefits you could claim

Find out what support you may be able to get by working through the different life situations. Be sure to look at every situation relevant to you otherwise you could miss some useful information.

Getting advice

If you are aged 50 or over you can get benefits advice on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Drop in or arrange an appointment by telephoning 020 8503 4800. You can also arrange for a home visit from an adviser.

If you are aged 60 or over, you can get advice on your eligibility for benefit and help with completing claim forms from adviser with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). You will need to make an appointment. You should phone Age UK Newham on 020 8503 4800 to make an appointment.

For people who are on a low income such as benefits and want to appeal a social security tribunal's decision. Online personal advice and telephone advice. To check whether you are eligible and to ask for online advice visit the Civil Legal Advice page on Gov.uk. Telephone lines are open Monday to Friday 9am to 8pm, Saturday 9am to 12.30pm.

If you are deaf, you can get legal advice (provided you are on a low income) in British sign language via webcam.
