Types of parking spaces (bays)

break

Parking spaces are provided in locations where parking is safe and does not obstruct other road users.

Parking spaces are marked on the road with white lines and will accommodate several vehicles and make the best use of the available spaces (bays) which are clearly signed to indicate who may park there.

Parking bays may be of the following types:

Resident Bays
For residents and their visitors. All users must display a valid permit. Business permit holders can also park in these bays.

Shared Use Bays
To be shared by permit holders and short-term parkers. Permit holders can park when displaying a valid permit. Short-term parkers have to purchase a ticket from a Pay and Display machine which allows them to stay generally for a maximum of two hours Additional payments must not be made to extend the parking period initially paid for. Not applicable in Resident Only zones.

Four-Hour Shared Use Bays
These bays are for a maximum stay of four hours. There are only a small number of these bays and users should check the signs carefully.

Pay and Display Bays
Some bays in the RPZ are for Pay and Display users only. These are designated to assist shoppers and businesses. All vehicles parked in these bays must display a valid ticket purchased from a Pay and Display machine. The maximum stay is two hours. Additional payments must not be made to extend the parking period initially paid for. Not applicable in Resident Only zones.

Formal Disabled Bays
A formal disabled bay is recognisable by the white Disabled marking on the road and a sign on the footway, designating it for use by disabled blue badge holders only. Penalty Charge Notices may be issued to vehicles parked in a formal disabled bay that are not displaying a blue badge. These vehicles are often subsequently removed to enable legitimate blue badge holders to park. To report improper parking in a formal disabled bay call 020 8475 0213.

Disabled Resident Permit Holder Bays
A bay specifically installed for the use of disabled resident permit holders. A disabled resident permit holder can only park in disabled resident permit bays that are located in the same zone that their permit was issued. A blue badge cannot be used to park in this type of bay. To report improper parking in a disabled resident permit holder bay, call 020 8475 0213.

Loading Bays
These bays are normally used by goods vehicles to load or unload heavy or bulky goods. Unless the sign states otherwise, the public can use these bays but only to load or unload goods that are of a nature that make it necessary to park there (for example, very heavy). Loading or unloading must be continuous and the sign will normally state the maximum stay, which must not be exceeded. A blue badge cannot be used to park in this type of bay.

Please note:

Blue Badge Holders - Free parking, without limit of time, in on-street Pay and Display and shared use bays. There is one exception. Blue badge holders may only park for a maximum 30 minutes in the 30 minute bays along Green Street. Also, free parking, without limit of time, in permit holder bays. This excludes Doctor's Permit bays and Disabled Resident Permit Holder's Bays (where a valid permit is not held).

Permits - There are different categories of parking permit, including resident permits, disabled resident permits and business permits and each is described on this site. Permits are not transferable between vehicles or households.

Display of Permits - Resident, business and disabled resident parking permits should be displayed on the inside top left corner of the car windscreen.

Restricted Parking - Yellow lines indicate where parking is not allowed. All restrictions are in force during the controlled hours unless signs indicate otherwise. A parking permit does not give an exemption to park on yellow lines.
