Cycle
training
We use an outside company to carry
out all adult and child cyclist training courses in the
borough.
Children
We use a two tier training programme for children. The entry level
is a basic skills course aimed at children and young people aged
eight years old and upwards and consists of two sessions of two
hours each which take place off-road. This course covers bike
maintenance, practical manoeuvres and Highway Code theory and aims
to provide them with grounding for on-road training.
The next level is the on-road training aimed at children and young
people aged ten years old and above. It consists of four training
sessions of two hours each. The cyclists will use local roads to
practice manoeuvres commonly used by all cyclists. A more in depth
study of the Highway Code will form the basis of theoretical
training.
Children are then awarded certification and a prize for completing
their training.
Adults
Adults are offered 'Learn to Ride' courses which lasts
approximately one hour, depending on the needs of the individual
trainee, and involves one to one training with a qualified
instructor.
Adults are also offered 'Confidence' courses which are designed for
those who know how to ride but lack the necessary skills or
confidence to ride on the road. The training consists of two
sessions of one hour each with a qualified instructor, on a one to
one basis, that is conducted on the road. Occasionally adult
courses are offered in parks around Newham.
All training courses, where possible, will comply with
Adult/Children National Guidelines for Organisers and Instructors
on Cyclist Training.
