Become a
Streetwatcher
Newham Council is keen to increase
its unique band of Streetwatchers who act as the "eyes and ears" of
the street.
There are now more than 280 Streetwatchers around Newham, a strong
team made up of residents, businesses and organisations.
Streetwatchers help to make sure the street is clean and safe, they
report defects and problems and put forward suggestions for
improvements to the street environment. Streetwatchers look for any
problem, issue or repair in the street that needs action, in
particular:
- Abandoned vehicles
- Blocked street drains
- Damaged or uneven pavements
- Dog fouling
- Flytipping and dumped rubbish
- Graffiti and Flyposting
- Litter
- Overgrown or dangerous street trees
- Potholes
- Street lighting not working (i.e. on all day, not on at
night)
When Streetwatchers raise an issue, it is investigated with a
view to action being taken - the council will continue to do its
visual checks but cannot be down every street every day.
This is where you come in.
The council organises quarterly meetings with guest speakers to
discuss issues relating to street scene, where Streetwatchers can
learn more about various council services, share ideas, discuss
issues and get to know officers.
Streetwatchers receive quarterly newsletters, keeping them up to
date about council activities and initiatives.
In addition to this, we also organise a Christmas party, as a
thank-you event for the commitment shown during the year.
If you would like to know more about the scheme and become one of
our valuable Streetwatchers, please
email Rashmi
Prajeesh or write to her at:
London Borough of Newham
Public Realm
25 Nelson Street
East Ham
London E6 6EH
You will then be sent an application pack with all
the information you need to be a Streetwatcher.
When joining the scheme, you will be given a Streetwatcher number,
which you will be able to use on all future reporting.
As a Streetwatcher, you will decide how much time you want to spend
on your activities and you will be able to report problems in any
area throughout the borough.
So if you care about the street where you live, want to see defects
and repairs carried out more quickly and are prepared to give up a
little of your time to help others, then you are just the person we
are looking for.
