Forest Gate
SPD
The regeneration of Forest Gate is
a key priority for Newham. A Supplementary Planning Document (SPD)
has been produced to set out the Council's vision for the town
centre and to provide guidance for future development.
What is the Forest Gate SPD?
The Forest Gate SPD provides further guidance on policies within
the Unitary Development Framework and London Plan relevant to
Forest Gate, particularly the town centre. It sets out how the
regeneration of the area will be achieved and how planning policies
should be implemented. The SPD is an important consideration for
the determination of planning decisions in the area and will ensure
that sites coming forward for development will contribute to the
revitalisation of Forest Gate as a whole.
Why have we produced the Forest Gate SPD?
The SPD is needed to ensure that future development makes a
positive contribution to the regeneration of Forest Gate. The
challenges include: protecting and enhancing the special historic
character of the area; managing the private and public sector
investment that is needed to bring about change; providing
affordable homes; tackling antisocial behaviour; improving the role
of Forest Gate as a retail centre; and ensuring there are enough
community facilities to provide for the needs of local
people.
When was the SPD adopted?
Public consultation on the Draft Forest Gate SPD took place from
14 October to 22 November 2009. The final SPD was adopted by
Newham's Mayor in consultation with Cabinet on 21 January
2010.
