Do I need planning
permission?
Anyone who wishes to carry out
work on buildings or land may be required to, firstly, obtain
planning permission. Planning permission is necessary for a wide
range of development, including relatively minor alterations that
may affect the appearance or use of buildings.
The Planning Portal's
General Public section gives general advice
about the kinds of work for which you need to apply for planning
permission and those for which you do not.
The planning portal provides a number of toolkits which may assist
you. Please note however these are only intended to be a guide and
may not fully reflect Newham's local requirements, which can be
found in our
individual application packs.
Other guides available are:
Fee calculator
Carbon calculator
Volume calculator
Plan and Map creator
In addition, the interactive house guide for a
terraced house or
semi-detached house provide visual guidance and
information about how planning permission might apply to various
types of householder projects.
Plus the
Party Wall etc. Act 1996 explanatory booklet
has been produced by the Communities and Local Government
department to help anyone who wishes to carry out work or who
receives notification of proposed work.
