Heritage Economic
Regeneration Scheme (HERS)
Heritage Economic Regeneration
Schemes (HERS)/Partnership Schemes in Conservation Areas (PSCA) are
countrywide projects set up by English Heritage, the main objective
being to improve run-down commercial areas through building
improvements in Conservation Areas.
Our first HERS in Stratford was completed in 2004. This
was followed by works in Forest Gate carried out in phases. Before
and after photos of HERS Phase 1 in Forest Gate are shown
below:
The HERS is one element of a multi-million pound programme of
physical regeneration in the Forest Gate area. It involved the
repair and cleaning of building fronts and the installation of new
shop fronts in the Forest Gate Town Centre Conservation Area.
In 2006 it won the Regeneration category in the Royal Institute of
Chartered Surveyors (RICS) London Regional awards, was a finalist
in the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) awards, and received a
'mention' in the Civic Trust awards.
Missing or damaged architectural features have been restored to
recreate the uniform nature of Victorian terraces. Much of the
unsuitable modern signage and other clutter has been removed or
replaced by features more in keeping with the heritage of the
buildings.
Complementary projects in the area include repaving, road
resurfacing, new street furniture as well as new and improved
residential accommodation.
