- Canning Town is in the top 5 per cent most deprived areas in
the UK with local people suffering from poor health, low education
and poverty. In recent surveys, 68 per cent of residents indicated
concerns about crime, 17 per cent of the local working-age
population have a limiting long-term illness, 17.5 per cent claim

regeneration?
- The Canning Town and Custom House Regeneration Project is
currently funded via the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund. Support is
also coming from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM),
English Partnerships, London Development Agency (LDA), Greater
London Authority (GLA), along with a consortium of housing
developers and registered social landlords all registering their
commitment to realising the vision of Canning Town and Custom House
regeneration.

available (either in person or by writing) from Canning Town and

- When are residents in the regeneration
area going to be re-housed?
- The building of new homes will be carried out in phases. This
has been worked out to ensure that enough homes are available at
all times during regeneration for existing residents to move into.
Residents do not have to move within the area and may choose to
move out to other areas in or out of Newham. However, we have tried
to ensure that those residents who want to stay in a particular
area, Canning Town north or south of the A13, or Custom House can
do so.
- Who are the contractors carrying out the
work?
- A panel of three developer consortiums has been selected. The
three are Countryside, Lend Lease and E-Central. They will tender
for each individual area. ECF are the developers for Canning Town
Centre.
- What arrangements are there to minimise
disruption during the works?
- All contractors will be asked to sign up to a considerate
contractor scheme.
- What is the purpose of the Canning Town
Survey?
- The survey among residents and businesses in the Canning Town
and Custom House area was designed to identify the key issues and
priorities for locals as well as to assess the level of support
amongst these groups for the planned developments.
