Ongoing projects

There are a number of ongoing external funding projects.

Forest Gate & Plaistow - Sustainable Communities (SRB Round 5)

The Forest Gate and Plaistow SRB5 finished on March 31 2006 with a large community event celebrating the achievements of the programme over the last 7 years.

The programme fully met it's SRB spending target of £23m and gained further public and private funds to make a total programme spend of just under £90m. Other headline targets include:

  • 230 jobs created - exceeding targets by 25 percent
  • Over 480 jobs safeguarded
  • 30,000 pupils benefiting from projects designed to enhance and improve attainment
  • 240 disadvantaged people into jobs - exceeding targets by over 30 percent
  • Over 850 local businesses were supported
  • Approximately 2,700m2 of new business and commercial floor space was developed
  • Passmore Urban Regeneration, the residential development agency established during the early years of the programme, completed or improved nearly 2,000 dwellings (including local authority, housing association and privately owned).

Passmore was created to ensure a legacy for the SRB programme. It has recruited a Regeneration Manager, Colin Babb, to help make this happen.

Newham A2E Programme

Access to Excellence (A2E) is a £18 million urban regeneration programme that aims to assist three of the most deprived Community Pathway areas in Newham.

Key objectives of the programme:

  • Enhance the employment prospects, education and skills of local people
  • Address social exclusion and improve opportunities for the disadvantaged
  • Promote sustainable regeneration, enhancing and protecting the environment and infrastructure
  • Support and promote growth in local economies and businesses.

The A2E programme officially came to a close on 31 March 2007 having achieved or bettered many of its lifetime targets. Although some late running activities will continue until the end of the year, the Final Evaluation of the programme can be found here:

Newham Neighbourhood Renewal Fund (NRF)

Newham has received £39m of the 2006-08 Neighbourhood Renewal Fund. The money will go towards tackling deprivation and making improvements in the following services:

  • Crime and Disorder
  • Culture and Social Regeneration
  • Environment and Physical Regeneration
  • Health and Social Wellbeing
  • Employment and Enterprise

More than £6m of NRF funds have been allocated to the Employment & Enterprise Programme in order to help local people improve their skills and access local jobs, and offer support and advice to local businesses.

The NRF Employment Stream has a total budget of £5m. Following a bidding process, this amount has been allocated to these organisations and projects:

  • Community Links - ESOL and Basic Skills Training, job search support and work experience placements

  • East Potential - Training and job search support to Newham residents
  • Shaw Trust - Training support to disabled people
  • Talent - Employment support services to young BME people
  • Workplace - Training and job brokerage services to unemployed Newham residents
  • East Potential - Construction training
  • ELBA - Construction and security training
  • Groundwork - Training in security, green economy, construction, retail and health
  • NCFE - Training in Finance
  • NewVic - Retail Training
  • Kennedy Scott - Security training
  • Newham Health Trust - training and job brokerage support into health and social care employment.

To date, more than 600 Newham residents have been employed thanks to the NRF projects.

The NRF Business Programme, with a £1m budget, provides businesses with the following services:

  • Business advice
  • Website support
  • Supply chain training and support.

West Ham and Plaistow New Deal for Communities (NDC)

New Deal for Communities (NDC) is a government programme designed to tackle social exclusion, community safety, unemployment and low educational attainment in areas of severe need throughout the country.

The NDC programme is supported by Department for Communities and Local Government's (DCLG) Neighbourhood Renewal Unit (NRU) and administered on a regional basis by Government Offices. NDC takes forward the Government's commitment to tackle social exclusion in the context of the strategy "A New Commitment to Neighbourhood Renewal: National Strategy Action Plan".

The West Ham and Plaitow NDC is a comprehensive area based regeneration programme, which begain in 2000 and finishes in 2010. A total grant of £54.6 million is available for this period. The programme is designed to improve the quality of life and provide more opportunities for residents in the West Ham and Plaistow area.

The programme aims to establish a strong and enterprising community at the heart of an area with a strong identity, civic pride and with the magnetism to attract and retain aspiring residents.

The area will have a good quality housing, good community facilities, an attractive environment, excellent schools and services and the ability to access economic opportunities as they arise as a result of the community and statutory authorities, joining forces to challenge, exercise choice and promote change.
