Getting Married

Documents Required to Arrange a Marriage

A checklist...
Before you can be married you must both give notice. When you come to give notice you must produce certain documents.

We ask everyone to bring their passport. If you are a European Union national we will accept your national ID. If you are British and do not have a passport then you will have to produce your birth certificate and some other photo ID.

If not EU Nationals
If one or other of you is not a European Union National you must produce Indefinite Leave to Remain (with a photograph) a fiancé(e)visa or Certificate of Approval from the Home Office (telephone 0870 606 7766). If you do not have a passport and you are a foreign national you will need to produce a Home Office Identity Card or travel document to confirm you have Indefinite Leave to remain in the UK.

You must also produce proof of your address (driving licence, bank statement, credit card statement or medical card).

Your name
If you have changed your name by Deed Poll, Change of Name Deed or Statutory Declaration you must produce this document when giving notice.

If you have been through any form of marriage in any country of the world you must produce evidence that the previous marriage has ended. This includes Islamic and customary marriages abroad.

Divorced
If you have been married previously and divorced, in any country, you will be required to show evidence of your divorce.

If the divorce took place in England or Wales, you will need to produce a Decree Absolute bearing the official stamp of the court.

Divorced Abroad
If you were divorced abroad, we will need to see the original documents issued. If these documents are written in a foreign language, an English translation may be required.

If you are widowed
You will be asked to produce the death certificate of your late spouse and possibly your marriage certificate as well.

Under 18
If either of you is under 18 years of age, you will be required to show proof that your parents or guardian(s) have consented to your marriage. If your parents are now divorced we will need to see the Decree Absolute and the court order determining legal custody of you. Please speak to the Register Office about the required consent form.

If you've been married before

  • If you have married each other in a foreign country you only need to get married here if you think that marriage was not legal. If you decide to get married here we will need to see any documents issued by that country when you give us notice of your marriage.

  • If you have been married to each other in a religious ceremony (Islamic, Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, etc) without having been to the Register Office to get a form to give to the minister or priest who performed the marriage then you must give notice and re-marry to get a legal certificate.
