Getting Married
Notice of
Marriage
This is how you arrange your marriage or
register a marriage...
If you are getting married anywhere other than in a
Church of England church you will need to give notice.
If you have already been married in your own religion in this
country you must have a registered marriage - you will need to give
notice.
You both have to live somewhere in England and Wales for seven days
before you give notice and you have to wait 16 days after the
notice before you can be married. The notice lasts for 12
months.
You normally go to the register office for the district where you
have been living or staying for the previous seven days. If one or
both of you are not British or European Union nationals you must
give notice together at a designated register office (including the
one in Newham).
Church of England If you are getting married
in the Church of England you arrange everything with the
Vicar.
Religious marriage
If you are getting married in a religious building you may have to
have a registrar come to the building to register the marriage -
although most religious buildings have their own registrar. See
Marriage
Authority.
Non-religious marriage
If you are having a non-religious marriage you can be married at
any building registered for marriages - either in the area you live
or anywhere else in England and Wales.
Giving notice means you both have to go to a Register Office with
documents (see
Documents Needed for a Marriage), usually in the district where
you live.
