Sessions can be found at all Newham leisure centres,
enabling clients to recover quickly and improve their overall
physical and mental functioning.
The programme is delivered by British Association of Cardiac
Rehabilitation. (BACR) qualified instructors, for those who have
completed Phase 3 program in the hospital following a heart attack
or heart surgery.
The goal is to reduce the risk of another cardiac event or to
keep an already present heart condition from getting worse.
Combining all aspects of cardiovascular rehabilitation in
appropriate patients improves functional capacity and quality of
life, reduces risk factors and may create a sense of well being and
optimism about the future.
Phase IV beginners class takes place every Monday 10:30 -
11:30am and consists of a circuit class designed to build up
aerobic stamina to help maintain an active life style and enjoy an
enhanced quality of life.
The circuit class combines aerobic exercise and light resistance
work. Everybody has the chance to progress at each station and
records their own progress on a log card using the Borg Scale.
Before starting the rehabilitation programme, the patient has an
initial assessment to find out how much exercise they can safely do
and tailor the programme to their needs.
At the beginning of each session there are warm-up exercises
which involve stretching the muscles. All the exercises are
carefully explained and demonstrated. At the end of each exercise
session you will do 'cool-down' exercises to stretch out your
muscles and prevent them from aching the next day.
It is normal to feel anxious about exercising after a heart
attack or heart surgery. However, going to rehabilitation classes
can help give you the confidence to become active again.
Advanced classes are available for those whom have completed the
12 week beginner's course and take place on Monday 11.45am -
12.45pm and Thursdays noon - 1pm. These classes are circuit/aerobic
based similar to the Beginners Class.
Many people find that rehab programmes are very helpful after
getting out of hospital. They find it very helpful to have
specialist, structured exercise class and have support of those who
have been through a similar experience.
