Fit Club
Miles
Residents are invited to put their best
foot forward and walk a mile at a Newham Fit Club mile
event.
The event is a chance to get healthy, meet like-minded
people and enjoy Newham parks.
The next Fit Club mile is scheduled for Sunday June
24 at Beckton District Park North, E6. Find out your
fitness rating and receive a certificate and a free
pedometer.
There are three leisurely mile walks during the event, 11am, 12
noon and 1pm. Walkers can choose their own pace but should arrive
half an hour before the start to register.
The entire family can join in, as there are no age restrictions.
Each participant aged 18 or over will have the opportunity to find
out their fitness rating. A certificate and free pedometer will be
given to everyone who completes the walk.
Lead Member for Health Councillor Clive Furness said, "Walking is
good for your heart and lungs, costs nothing and can be enjoyed by
people of all ages. Studies show that walking reduces the risk of
coronary heart disease and lowers high cholesterol and blood
pressure."
"The Newham Mile Walk is a step in the right direction towards a
healthy, more active life."
Newham Fit Club aims
to help local people become more active and improve their lifestyle
through healthy initiatives. It is a joint venture between Newham
Council, Newham Primary Care Trust and the University of East
London.
Health experts recommend taking 10,000 steps per day, which
roughly equates to 60 minutes of walking.
Previous Fit Club mile events have been held in Memorial
Recreation Ground, West Ham; Central Park, East Ham; and Plashet
Park, Forest Gate. Since the scheme began in April 2006 more than
250 people have taken part.
