How Newham is Governed

    • Mayoral Proceedings

      When the Mayor is making decisions alone or in consultation with an individual cabinet member or mayoral adviser, he will make these decisions at meetings known as mayoral proceedings.

    • The Call-in Process

      All reports of the Mayor or a key decision of an officer are published 5 clear working days before the decision is taken. The reports include recommendations which set out the intended decision.

    • Overview and Scrutiny

      The Overview and Scrutiny function acts as a check and balance on the Executive Mayor, holding him to account for his decisions.

      A list of the rights held by members of the Public.

    • Cabinet Meetings

      The Cabinet meets monthly usually in public. See the calendar for the dates and times of meetings.

    • Introduction

      The council is made up of the Mayor and 60 locally elected councillors who make decisions on how to provide local services on behalf of local people.

    • The political make-up of the Council

      The political make-up of the Council is made up of the Mayor (Sir Robin Wales - Labour) and 60 Councillors (currently 54 are Labour, 3 are Christian Peoples Alliance and 3 are Respect).

      Most of the major decisions about the council's business are made at meetings which are open to the public.

      The Forward Plan tells you what key decisions will be made by the Mayor or by officers over the coming months.
