How to Become a Councillor
The Nomination
Process
Please note nominations are now closed.
Nominations were accepted between 24 March and 3 April (noon) 2006.
The following information is for the record.
- The nomination form must be signed (subscribed) by 10
electors (one proposer, one seconder and 8 assenters) registered to
vote in the ward / division where the candidate wishes to
stand.
- On 5 April the Returning Officer will publish a statement as to
persons nominated. The statement will be available for public
viewing at Newham Town Hall, East Ham, E6 2RP.
- 6 April is the last day for notice of appointment of election
agents.
Election agents
The election agent is the person responsible to the candidate and
in law for the proper management of the candidate's campaign. In
particular, the election agent is responsible for the financial
management of the election campaign and for ensuring that a
candidate's election expenses returns and the accompanying
declarations are properly completed and delivered within the
specified time.
A candidate must appoint an election agent, but he or she may act
as their own agent. If an agent is not appointed by the statutory
deadline the candidate is deemed to be their own election
agent.
Please note this timetable is subject to the Representation of the
People (Amendment) Regulations 2006, as currently laid before
Parliament, coming into force. If the Regulations are not
implemented on time, the following will change:
- The last day for requests for a new postal vote will be no
later than 5pm on Tuesday 25 April.
- There will be no provision to apply to vote by proxy on grounds
of medical emergencies.
- The deadline for replacing lost or spoilt postal ballot papers
will be up to 5pm on Wednesday 3 May.
