Learning Community Services

Other Learning Community projects

Other projects supported by Learning Community Services include Breakfast Clubs, Homework Clubs, Motivational Lectures and GCSE Community Language Teaching Grants.
Breakfast Clubs

Learning Community Services support schools to set up Breakfast Clubs, where pupils are the given the opportunity to enjoy additional learning activities before the start of the school day, and the chance to enjoy a healthy breakfast.

Schools are not only using the Breakfast Club model as a way to improve pupils' diet and the positives attached to this, such as increased levels of concentration, but also to improve upon other areas of their school life. Many Newham Headteachers and Breakfast Club co-ordinators have commented on the marked improvement in pupils' attendance and punctuality, and for many pupils their attitude within school and towards learning has improved noticeably.

Homework Clubs

Working in partnership with libraries, Learning Community provides support for tutors at all of the 10 libraries in Newham to run after school clubs. The sessions are run on an informal 'drop-in' basis to use ICT, which is blocked out of two hours and dedicated to homework, and for help in retrieving and interpreting information.

To help ensure high quality study support provision is ensured in the libraries, Learning Community staff are providing 'Critical Friend' support to help individual libraries pass through QiSS.

Motivational Lectures

The programme aims to provide a source of inspiration and motivation for young people, who face many challenges in today's society.

All fifteen of Newham's secondary schools are invited to take part in the Motivational Lectures programme, which in the past has included speakers such as Tony Jarrett (World Champion hurdler), Tony Cesay (entrepreneur and champion boxer) and Missy D (Music Specialist and radio presenter).

GCSE Community Language Teaching Grants

The aim of GCSE Community Language Teaching Grants is to work with schools and voluntary sector community organisations to broaden GCSE Community Language provision in the borough, raising achievement at GCSE Level.
