Summer and holiday schools

Our free summer and holiday school programmes offer children additional learning opportunities during the summer holidays and other school breaks.
Summer School

Newham's Learning Community Services plan and deliver a programme of summer holiday courses for young people aged 8-18 each year.

All courses are free!
They run over 5 weeks during the schools' summer holidays.

We hope to give students an opportunity to study new subjects in interesting locations across Newham, whilst also raising achievement of children and young people at Key Stage 2, 3 and 4.

The courses range from a one-day mendhi course, to five-day course on Spanish and a three-week drama course, which culminates in an end of course production. As part of the Summer School provision we also run a programme of Literacy and Numeracy Summer Schools, which are open to young people from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Summer School brochures are distributed through schools, Newham Libraries, Leisure Centres and Local Service Centres.

To ensure that all students who wish to participate are able to attend at least one course, students are limited to a maximum of 3 course choices.

Students, Tutors and Centre Managers complete evaluation forms at the end of each course. This data allows courses to be monitored and helps to informs future planning.

In July 2007 Summer School achieved QiSS recognition at Advanced level. The first local authority Summer School to receive this award.

Holiday and Easter Schools

Holiday Schools follow the Summer School model but on a smaller scale. At Easter and the three half term breaks we offer a programme of course usually about 20 courses at a range of centres.
