We have books in Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, Punjabi, Tamil,
Malayalam, Chinese, Tagalog, Arabic, Somali, African French,
European languages, African Caribbean Interest and Asian Interest
English books. Dual language books for children in various
languages are also available. We also have Quick Pick collections
in Urdu, Bengali, Gujarati and Tamil at Green Street and East Ham
libraries.
Audio visual
We also have DVDs, CDs to cater to different tastes and ages
including Bollywood films and music, religious, bhangra, ghazals,
re-mix, classical, soca, calypso, gospel, reggae, garage, hip hop
and R&B.
Periodicals
We keep a range of newspapers and magazines and journals in a
variety of different community languages in all our
libraries.
Events and promotions
We organise various multicultural events and displays such as Black
History Month, Diwali, Eid, Ramadan, Chinese New Year, Guru Nanak's
birthday, Vaisakhi, Tamil New Year, Pongal and Mushairra aimed at
different ethnic minority communities.
Community language
reading groups
We run three community
language reading groups which are:
• Gujarati Reading Group at Green Street Library: meets every last
Thursday of the month between 2.00 and 4.00pm.
• Tamil Reading Group at East Ham Library: meets every second
Wednesday of the month between 11.00am and 1.00pm.
• Urdu Reading Group for women at the Library @ The Gate: meets
every second Tuesday of the month between 5.30 and 7.30pm
Community Involvement/Outreach
We work in partnership with community organisations to promote our
service and organise events.
