Newham Community Education and Youth Service

What we do

Newham Community Education, in partnership with Newham College of Further Education provides part-time day and evening courses at a wide variety of local centres across Newham recrruiting over 10,000 students each year. We provide learning opportunities for all Newham residents in order to foster a culture of lifelong learning across the generations.

We also focus on building self-confidence and regeneration in local communities and improving access to employment and community involvement.

Currently, Newceys offers courses in the following curriculum areas:

  • Health, Public Services & Care
  • Social Sciences
  • Science & Mathematics
  • History & Philosophy
  • Floristry & Flower Arranging
  • Construction, Planning & the Built Environment
  • Information & Communications Technology
  • Beauty, Complimentary Therapies & Fitness
  • Catering, Travel & Tourism
  • Arts, Media, Fashion & Publishing
  • Languages, Literature & Culture
  • Courses for Adults with Learning Difficulties
  • Skills for Life & Work: ESOL & Basic Skills
  • Business Administration & Law
  • Education & Training

Who can use this service?
Adult education courses are open to anyone over 16 years of age, who is eligible.
They are particularly aimed at Newham residents, but are open to people from other areas.

The eligibility criteria for LSC funded courses are that the learner is:
- a British or EU citizen
- a refugee
- an asylum seeker

Cost
The tuition fee for all other NewCEYS' courses is currently £1.50 per hour. There is an additional fee for entering an examination or for materials.

Free tuition is available for a learner who is:

1. In receipt of one of the following benefits:

  • Job Seekers Allowance
  • Council Tax Credit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Disability Allowance
  • Income Support
  • or if you are an unwaged dependant of anyone in receipt of one of the above benefits

2. Over 60 years of age
3. Under 19 on August 1st 2007.
4. A registered asylum seeker or has refugee status
5. Basic Skills Student

However there will be a registration fee of £5 for those on concessions.
