The 25-acre site dates from 1898 and has largely
retained its historical design alongside a number of recent
developments and improvements.
But the park isn't interested in resting on its
laurels, as funding for a major makeover has been agreed in
principle by the Heritage Lottery Fund, which has awarded Newham a
£62,250 grant to develop plans for the restoration.
Central Park stands to gain nearly £2 million from the
Heritage Lottery Fund if the detailed plans are approved, the
largest application to date from the borough to the Heritage
Lottery Fund.
Central Park vision
'Central Park is an inspirational historic park at the centre of
its community, providing a beautiful place that offers a wide range
of opportunities and diverse experiences which people can safely
participate in and enjoy.
The park particularly reinforces the child-centred and
healthy-living principles of the original park creators.'
Over the next year, the council will be consulting with the local
community as it develops plans including:
- recreating the formal Victorian garden
- restoring the historic Burges drinking fountain
- restoring the War Memorial garden
- improving the park café and toilets
- introducing a history trail repairing paving, railings and
furniture
- employing a Community Education and Access Officer who will be
based in the park to develop education programmes and activities
for the local communities.
Getting Involved
Central Park will be the focus of ongoing consultation until the
end of spring 2006 involving local groups and individuals. This
will include:
- direct contact with groups and residents a series of workshops
and activities to inform the future development of the park
- a community notice board at the park café to keep visitors
up-to-date with progress
- updates in the local press and the Newham Magazine.
