The common or brown rat is found throughout Britain, living anywhere that offers food and shelter in both towns and the countryside. It has now almost replaced the ship or black rat.
Fleas are parasites of warm-blooded animals. There are many species and each prefers its' own host but will feed on other animals including humans. The human flea and dog flea are now rare in this country and we are usually bitten by cat fleas.
The wasp is probably the most familiar but generally disliked of all British insects.
The house mouse is found throughout Britain and is the most important species affecting domestic properties. It is also found living outside and in outbuildings.
Cockroaches have existed for millions of years and there are many species around the world. About six of these have become closely associated with man and are very widespread. The most commonly found in this country are the German cockroach and the Oriental cockroach. They are very successful as they eat almost anything, breed rapidly and tolerate a wide range of conditions.
