Recycling

Community and Charity Recycling Projects

There are several charities or public interest organisations that support special recycling projects. You can donate your unwanted goods for reuse by these projects including spectacles, bicycles, tools, shoes, textiles, office furniture and many more.

Bicycles

Re~Cycle

While many bikes in the UK are thrown away or lie rusting in garages, people in less developed countries are without transport. Walking, for example to collect water or go to school, can take up to four hours a day. Re~Cycle collects and ships second hand bicycles and parts to less developed countries. They help teach local people how to repair and maintain bicycles to improve their lives in a sustainable manner.

To make your donation or for more information visit www.re-cycle.org.

Office Furniture

Green-Works

Green-Works is a registered charity that recycles redundant office equipment for use by other charities, schools, community groups and even start-up businesses.

By giving companies a way to get rid of their unwanted furniture, etc., Green-Works helps to reduce the pressure on land fill waste disposal sites.

In the process, Green-Works provides training and employment for long-term unemployed and disabled people as they collect, warehouse and deliver the furniture to community organisations.

If you wish to donate or purchase office furniture, please visit their website www.green-works.co.uk or call on 0845 230 2231.

Shoes and Textiles

The Clothes Store

The Clothes Store offers a service to Newham residents who are on a low income and need additional help with clothes and household goods. People are referred to the service through council, health and other agencies.

The Clothes Store is managed and run by a charity known as Hand in Hand. It offers good quality clothes and shoes (both new and second hand), blankets and bedding, toys and baby items.

People who are referred to the service can take as much as they need but are limited to three visits in any three month period. All donations of good quality items are accepted.

Call Vital or Olive on 020 8430 6506 to make donations.

European Recycling Ltd

The European Recycling Company may be the UK's only specialist shoe recycler. They have around 3000 shoe recycling sites, stands and banks, around the country where they take all footwear in any condition and prepare it for use in less advantaged regions.

Spectacles

Vision Aid Overseas

If you have unwanted spectacles, instead of throwing them away donate them to Vision Aid. Vision Aid is a charity that concentrates on providing spectacles for people in developing countries and therefore depends upon donations of spectacles.

To donate yours, hand them in at your local opticians or any charity shop that has a Vision Aid Collection Bin.

Visit www.vao.org.uk for more information.

Tools

Tools For Self Reliance

This charity collects unwanted tools, refurbishes them and then sends them to developing countries. These tools are warmly welcomed there as they allow poor communities to work for themselves.

To find out what tools are needed and where you can make your donation visit www.tfsr.org.
