Yellow Pages Yellow Woods Challenge for Schools

New City Primary School takes first place in the Newham 2007 Yellow Woods Challenge!

About the Challenge

Photo of New City School and their winning Yellow Pages sculpture The Yellow Woods Challenge is the schools' environmental competition run every year by Yellow Pages, working with the Woodland Trust and Newham. It is a fun, simple, educational campaign, aimed at providing environmental education to students by recycling Yellow Pages.

Residents can recycle old Yellow Pages each year by giving them to local participating schools or taking them to Jenkins Lane Reuse and Recycling Centre (RRC).

Schools can participate each year in the Yellow Pages Yellow Woods Challenge by collecting old Yellow Pages for recycling over the period of the campaign.

All participating schools will receive free educational materials and toolkits filled with fun ideas, which together with the campaign mascot Kirt, help bring recycling and woodland conservation messages to life in the classroom.

The Challenge aims to:

  • Recycle old Yellow Pages directories and reduce demands on landfill
  • Educate school children about the importance of recycling and conservation
  • Support the Woodland Trust in helping to keep native woodland alive

Prizes

Participating schools simply ask students to collect old Yellow Pages directories to have the chance to win a share of £82,250 in cash prizes for their school. Schools are also invited to create giant sculptures out of their old directories to win further cash prizes. For every pound in cash prizes awarded to schools, Yellow Pages will give a matching pound to the Woodland Trust, the UK's leading woodland charity.

There are three local prizes for schools recycling the most Yellow Pages per pupil within Newham:

  • Gold Oak £300
  • Silver Birch £200
  • Bronze Beech £100

And a bonus prize of £100 for the Best Sculpture.
