Registering a Death

FAQs

How much does it cost to register?
Nothing.
Do I need an appointment to register?
No
Do I get a free certificate?
No - you receive a document to arrange a funeral, and one for the Benefits Agency. All certificates cost £3-50.
Who can register a death?
A relative has the responsibility for registering. If no relative is available, then someone present at the death, or arranging the funeral may register instead.
What documents do I need to bring to register?
The certificate from the hospital or doctor certifying the cause of death. Sometimes the Coroner will issue this directly to us. We will ask lots of information about the deceased (names, date & place of birth, maiden name, marital status, names of spouse, occupations) so it is useful to bring birth certificate, marriage certificate, passport if they are easy to find.
Where was my relative buried?
We do not hold records of burials here.
My relative died abroad - how do I get a certificate?
From the country where the death occurred.
My relative died in Newham General, but I live a long way away - do I have to come to your office to register?
You can make a declaration at any register office. That Register Office will not be able to issue with the document for the funeral or any certificates. The Newham Register Office will issue these once the declaration has been received by post from the Register Office where the declaration is made.
